Wilame Lima is a French-born Brazilian artist whose journey is deeply intertwined with his narrative and the socio-political context of his origins. Growing up in Aracaju, Brazil, a place marked by the marginalization of its people, Wilame was early on exposed to the limitations imposed on racialized communities. His professional beginnings in journalism taught him the importance of technical precision and neutrality in photography. Yet, he found this notion of neutrality contradictory, as the news industry often politicizes and dehumanizes subjects. This realization propelled him to seek diversity and authenticity beyond traditional journalism. After residing in various countries, including Switzerland, Austria, France, and the United States, Wilame abandoned the quest for neutrality to explore themes of racism, homophobia, and xenophobia with poetic sensitivity, embracing a dreamlike approach to photography,
Wilame's current focus on nature photography is a deliberate choice to translate the human emotional experience into visual narratives. The natural world comes as a representation of the vast range of human emotions and experiences. Still, it also represents the locations marginalized individuals are often denied access to. His photography serves as a medium for emancipation and therapeutic exploration, aiming to legitimize and facilitate the entry of these individuals into restricted spaces. Holding a degree in Social Communication and Journalism and a master's in Data Science, Wilame has diversified his artistic expression through image illustration, film photography, and the creation of synthetic images with AI. Currently focusing on landscape photography, self-portraiture, and establishing an art gallery in Lisbon, his work transcends mere visual aesthetics to become a potent vehicle for social change, advocating for a world where freedom of movement and expression is accessible to all.
