Collage Artist Małgorzata Reszka-Matthes „Arteszka“ (born 1984) I live in Berlin but I come from Warsaw, Poland. Berlin as a city of contrasts, a cultural „mosaic“, inspires me a lot. Although being with two small children in a foreign country was not an easy time for me at the very beginning when I have moved here. I found solace in creating. I started to cut out collages from fashion magazines, which was very relaxing. I was always passionate about photography, but I felt I had to change something to make the pictures more wild. I progressed from analogue collages to digital transformation and there I spread the wings of my imagination. I started to present my collages on my Instagram account @arteszkaa. So my journey as a collage artist flourished in 2021. My artworks have been presented at group exhibitions in Warsaw and Milan.
Artistic statement
For me, collage is a journey between dimensions. It starts with an idea in my head and, through the creative process, often ends up in a place that surprises me myself. It is a journey to myself as well – I interweave each portrait with my emotions. As a highly sensitive person and woman, I give myself strength with my art and these are often my personal affirmations.
In my art I use contemporary and archive photographs as well as very old paintings (portraits) - I only choose those that I "feel". I know that behind every image there is a human story, so I try to treat them with respect. Moreover, I am grateful for every photograph that I use. Lately, I have been passionate about the transition of one image into another, in a gentle, gradual way. This way of transforming photographs makes me realise how human nature is complex and yet organically connected to its environment.
