The term scrying refers to the ancient practice of gazing into a reflective surface—such as a mirror, a pool of water, or glass—to glimpse images of the past or future. At the turn of the 20th century, cinema brought forth such visions: it revealed scenes, people, places, and gestures by displaying them on a bright surface, allowing us to witness the past in a new light.
In Scrying Frames, Lucie Planty offers us these visions through her video work, depicting simple yet evocative scenes—children swimming in a river, lovers resting in a park, a stroll along the beach. These ordinary moments of life unfold as distant dreams, each holding a secret, a memory on the verge of disappearing. The light gray tones, subtly distorted through digital processing, heighten the sense of vanishing, creating an almost enchanting phenomenon where the dense substance of time suddenly unfolds before our eyes.
