Jiayun Chen is a multidisciplinary artist whose work is deeply rooted in the interplay between Chinese and American cultures. Based in Los Angeles and Shanghai, Jiayun's art serves as a bridge between these two worlds, often focusing on the complexities that arise from living between different cultural and linguistic landscapes. Jiayun's watercolor series reflects a personal journey through language learning and the challenges of navigating between English and Chinese. Moving to America at the age of 15 necessitated a complete relearning of language, leading to an unfamiliar and often ambiguous linguistic environment. This experience fostered a passive imagination towards English words, a phenomenon likely shared by many language learners. Amidst this ambiguity, a natural and magical process of symbolic imagination took shape.
The "Nodes" series embodies this transformative experience, using watercolor paintings to explore the intersections of language, logos, and architecture. In this context, a "node" is a conceptual point where lines or pathways intersect or diverge, symbolizing moments of translation and interpretation. Through this series, Jiayun aims to create spaces that encourage active imagination and invite viewers to engage with different forms of translation and interpretation. By investigating and reimagining language, Jiayun's work highlights the dynamic process of cultural and linguistic exchange, inviting audiences to experience the rich, transformative potential found in the spaces between languages and cultures.
