My name is Dawn Louise Knott. I am a 55 year old artist who, until two months ago, hadn’t painted in over 20 years. I previously painted abstracts in acrylic. Last summer my husband bought me a pyrography tool, it wasn’t until this July I plucked up the courage to try it out. Creating portraits burned into wood reminded me of just how much I enjoy art. I went out and bought myself some oil paints, new brushes, canvas boards and stretched canvases. I started painting again in August and I enjoy every second of it. Rustic Peace is the first (successful) product of my fledgling art career, it is an adaptation of a photograph taken by my son near Cusworth Hall in South Yorkshire, UK. Painted in oils on stretched canvas Rustic Peace is designed to be hung unframed. All my pieces so far have been small in size, Rustic Peace is 20 cm x 20 cm, both Autumn’s Embrace and Water Under The Bridge are 18cm x 13 cm. I also have a few miniatures – 9 cm x 7 cm which come with their own tiny display easels.

Since 2010 I have developed multiple health conditions, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, carpal tunnel and tenosynovitis are the worst of the bunch. Together with severe migraines, these conditions mean I am limited to how much I can do. Art is my therapy, it helps me cope with constant pain, brain fog, fatigue, and insomnia to name just a few of the symptoms I live with every day. At the moment my art “studio” is an old tourer caravan in the back garden. It’s great for privacy, peace and quiet but very limited for space – hence the small size of my pieces to date. My goal is to make a living from my art. I would love to have a nice, big, airy studio filled with natural light where I can finally put something on the 40 cm x 40 cm canvas I have waiting in the wings as well as larger pieces. Ultimately, I would love to earn enough to fund an art degree and gain a qualification as an art therapist. I would then be able to make it possible for others with health issues to express themselves through art.
